More than 20 people are feared dead after suspected militants opened fire on tourists in India's Jammu and Kashmir region on Tuesday, according to TV reports. The assault, which occurred in the popular tourist spot of Pahalgam, marks the deadliest attack in the troubled Himalayan area in years. Kashmir had recently seen a surge in summer tourism as militant violence had declined.
On April 22, 2025, a horrific terrorist attack unfolded in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir,
claiming the lives of at least 26 tourists and injuring over 20 others. The attackers, linked to The Resistance Front (TRF)—a faction of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba—specifically targeted non-Muslim tourists, reportedly checking their identities and religious affiliations before opening fire. The massacre occurred in a remote meadow only reachable by foot or horseback, leaving many visitors vulnerable.
